Alimony Reform: Round one

The New Jersey Alimony Reform Law of 2014

Passed by the legislature on June 30, 2014

Signed into law by Governor Christie on September 10, 2014.

This law, while a step in the right direction, does not go far enough in advancing the goal of reducing the cost and uncertainty in alimony cases. As explained in a Press of Atlantic City Op Ed, I was disappointed that this bill moved forward rather than holding out for the needed reforms including guidelines (subject, of course, to a judge’s disretion in either direction when there is a basis to deviate) as to the amount and duration.
